Can I read runes for myself?
Yes. And it is probably easiest to start with yourself. You need nobody else to draw a rune, ask a question and see what its image makes you notice. There is only one difficulty. When the question is about us, we see very easily the exact answer we wanted to see.
So the problem is not whether you may read for yourself. The problem is another one: are you ready to hear more than the convenient answer?
Where did the ban come from?
The old sources hold no rule forbidding a person to turn to lots or signs for their own situation. Around AD 98 Tacitus describes Germanic lot-casting: marked pieces of wood were thrown on a white cloth and the result read. He describes both public and household cases. But precision matters: Tacitus does not say those marks were runes.
So his text is not an ancient instruction in rune reading. It simply shows that the idea of turning to the lot in personal and household matters was a normal part of that world. The ban «you must not read for yourself» appears much later.
Why reading for yourself is sometimes harder
Imagine you ask:
«Should I leave my job?»
And you draw Raidho — the road. If you already dream of quitting, it is very easy to read that as:
«Yes. The runes said go».
But you can put another question:
«What in my life needs movement right now?»
And suddenly the answer becomes far more interesting. Maybe it is about the job. Or maybe about how you relate to it, what you are avoiding, or where you have long wanted to move.
A good reading does not confirm your answer. It complicates it a little.
How to read runes for yourself
Do not try to make a rune say «yes» or «no». Better to ask a question that has no ready answer.
Not:«Will everything be all right?»
But:«What am I not noticing right now?»
Not:«Does he love me?»
But:«What am I really looking for in this relationship?»
Not:«Should I agree?»
But:«What will I lose if I say yes?»
Then the rune stops being a coin you toss for a decision. It becomes a way of looking at the question from the side.
And write down the first reaction
This is probably the most useful rule. When you have drawn a rune, write down the first thought before you start explaining it to yourself. What caught you? What felt wrong? What did you want to dismiss straight away?
Sometimes that very reaction says more than a long interpretation. Especially if a week later you come back to the entry and see it with different eyes.
A rune should not decide for you
You can believe a rune does not come by chance. You can consider it a random image that makes the mind look for a new connection. For the reading itself that does not matter much. Either way the decision stays yours. A rune can ask a good question. Living with the answer will be up to you.
