Three runes: when one is not enough
One rune gives an image.
Three already start talking to each other. The first can show what you brought with you.
The second — where you stand now.
The third — where this story may lead next.
Not three separate answers. One small story.
The simplest spread
Put one question into words. Then draw three runes and lay them left to right. The first — what is behind. What brought you here? What still affects the situation?
The second — what is now. Where is the main tension? What is worth seeing more clearly? The third — where it leads. Not necessarily «what will certainly happen». Rather, what direction opens if everything continues as it is.
Then do not hurry to read each one separately. Look at all three. What changed from the first to the third? That is where the spread begins.
For instance
Imagine: Isa — Raidho — Sowilo. Ice. The road. The sun. You can read it very literally: something was frozen → movement begins → more clarity ahead. But it is more interesting to put a question to the passage itself. What has to melt before I can move? What changes if I really take this road?
Where do I already see the light but do not yet let myself walk toward it? Three runes give not simply more meanings. They give the link between meanings.
And is this an ancient runic spread?
Not quite.
Around AD 98 Tacitus described a Germanic lot: marked pieces of wood were scattered, and then three were picked out — one at a time. It is very tempting to see that as the ancestor of the modern three-rune spread. But Tacitus does not call the marks runes. And above all, he does not say: the first is the past, the second the present, the third the future.
Those positions appeared in modern runic practice much later. So the gesture of picking three signs has a very old echo. The familiar structure of the spread is modern.

Does the third rune predict the future?
I would not hurry to read it that way. «The future» easily turns into:
«What will happen to me?»
But it is far more interesting to ask:
«Where does what is happening now lead?»
Then the third rune passes no sentence. It shows a direction. And you can still change it.
Read not only the runes — read between them
This is the main difference between three runes and one. If the first speaks of wealth, the second of need and the third of a gift — what happened between them? If you begin with ice, pass through the road and arrive at the sun — where was the turn? Perhaps the most important answer is not on any single rune. It is in the movement from one to the next.
