Are runes demonic?
No. Runes were not symbols of demons. They were writing.
People wrote names, dedications, memorial inscriptions and ordinary messages with them. Yes, runes could also be used in magic — for protection, healing or other ritual purposes. But that does not make the signs themselves «demonic». There is even a simple historical fact that shows it well: runes were used by Christians.
Christ in a rune poem
The Norwegian rune poem was written down in a Christian world. And in the stanza about hail — Hagall — Christ appears unexpectedly. Not as an enemy of the runes. Simply as part of the text. The Icelandic rune poem also survived in a Christian setting, and its stanzas are accompanied by Latin names.
The people who copied and kept these texts clearly did not treat runes as forbidden signs of evil. For them this was part of an old language and culture that was still worth writing down.
But runes were used in magic, weren’t they?
Yes.
And that is an important part of their history. There are runic amulets, protective inscriptions and texts that were clearly credited with a power greater than the meaning of the written words. In the old poetry runes can help in battle, heal, protect a ship or a drink.
But magical does not mean demonic.
The pre-Christian North had no Christian system of demons at all, the one people sometimes try to fit these practices into today. It was another world, with its own gods, spirits, rites and ideas about power.
And modern occultism?
That is another story. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries European occultists began building new systems around the runes. One of the best known examples is Guido von List, who in 1908 published his own system of 18 signs. That is not the Elder Futhark of 24 runes. And it is no proof that the runes themselves come out of occultism. Quite the opposite: the runes are older than those systems by more than a thousand years.
So is it safe to take an interest in runes?
That depends not on the signs but on what you do with them. You can study runes as a historical script. You can read the old rune poems. You can use them as symbols for reflection. You can treat them spiritually or magically. None of those approaches is hidden inside the rune itself.
A rune is a sign. The meaning begins with what a person does with it.
