Bind runes: old sign, new intent
Take two runes. Lay one over the other. Leave them a shared line — and what stands before you is no longer two separate signs, but one. That is how it was done long ago. Bind runes really did exist in the old inscriptions.
But there is one important detail: people then usually joined runes to write a word or a name, not to create a magical symbol for love, protection or success. That way of using them appeared much later. So today two different traditions hide behind the words bind rune. And both are interesting.
What a bind rune is
The simplest answer: two or more runes brought together into one sign. Rather like a ligature in ordinary writing: several letters share a line or lie one over the other. Such signs really did survive on old objects. On a bone plate they spell the name Hadda. On the Franks Casket — part of the word sefa.
On a comb from Whitby — the Latin meus. There are other examples too, among them gægogæ on the Undley bracteate. Sometimes it saved space. Sometimes the sign simply sat better on a narrow surface. The main thing here is simple: bind runes are not yesterday’s idea. People really were joining runes more than a thousand years ago.
And magical bind runes?
Now that is another story. Today you can pick, say, three runes: one for protection, one for strength, one for the road, and then bring them together into one personal sign. People draw it on paper, cut it into wood, carry it with them or use it in a ritual. It is a beautiful, living modern practice. But the old inscriptions do not show us people making bind runes in that way.

Does that make modern bind runes «unreal»?
No.
Traditions do not stop being real just because they are new. If you make a sign out of several runes and put your own meaning into it — that is a real practice. Its history simply does not begin in the same place as the history of the old runic ligatures. And perhaps knowing that difference is even more interesting. You are not trying to copy a lost ritual. You are making something of your own out of very old signs.
Which runes can be combined?
There is no old rule here waiting to be «guessed». If you are making a modern bind rune, start not with a ready symbol from Pinterest but with the runes themselves. What does each of them mean? What image did it carry in the rune poems? And why exactly do you want to set these images side by side?
Instead of «I need a rune of success», you can ask: what is it that I actually want to reach? Strength to get through something hard? Movement? Protection?
Enough? The ability to let go? Then the sign does not begin with beautiful geometry. It begins with intent.
