Runes or tarot: what is the difference?
They can answer similar questions. But they speak in entirely different languages. Tarot gives you a whole scene: a person, a gesture, objects, colour, the direction of a gaze. Then a second card lands beside it, a third — and a story starts between them. A rune is far simpler.
One sign. One name. One old image. And a lot of room for you. Perhaps that is why runes and tarot feel so different, even when people come to them with one and the same question.
Runes are older. Tarot is more complex
The earliest known runic inscriptions appear around the second century. Tarot comes much later — the first known decks are from fifteenth-century Italy. But at the beginning neither was what we use today. Runes were for writing. Tarot was for playing.
The practices of reading the future, a character or a personal situation took shape later. So the strange truth is this: both runes and tarot are much older than the modern ways of reading them.
24 signs against 78 cards
The Elder Futhark has 24 runes. A standard tarot deck has 78 cards. But the difference is not only in the count. A tarot card can already be a small story in itself.
The Tower falls. A person stands before a choice. The Fool steps forward without looking down. A rune shows almost nothing. Isa, for instance, is a single vertical stroke.
And behind it — ice. And the question starts from that image: what in your life has come to a standstill? Tarot often gives more detail. Runes give more empty space.
They have different pasts
Behind the runes stand three medieval rune poems. They walk sign by sign and keep the old images: wealth, hail, ice, the sun, the road, a human being, a gift. This site rests on them in large part. Tarot has no ancient text explaining the meanings of all 78 cards in the same way. The first decks were made for play, and the esoteric systems around them grew much later.
That does not make one tradition more real than the other. They simply came to us by different roads.
And which is better for reading?
It depends on what you want. If you like images, characters, the links between several cards and a story gathering in front of your eyes — tarot has an incredibly rich language. If you want something simpler — one symbol, one image and a question you can be alone with — runes give an entirely different experience. You do not even have to pick a side.
