Kenaz comes when you have to light your own fire in the dark.
The meaning
Kenaz is the torch, the forge, the small flame that people keep against the night. It is knowledge you earn with your hands, a craft you slowly master, the moment something hidden finally becomes clear. It is the light you made yourself, which shows you only what you were willing to look at. Kenaz favours making, learning, and turning your gaze toward the thing you have been avoiding. A torch is no use if you keep it pointed at the wall.
Where it comes from
To the Anglo-Saxons this rune was cen, the torch, known by its flame. But the Norse gave the same sound a darker name: kaun, a sore, a fire in the flesh. Both are true. The heat that lights the workshop is the heat that burns the hand. The knowledge that frees you is often the knowledge that costs you your comfort. The old smiths understood this at the forge. You do not shape iron without fire, and you do not touch fire without care. Skill always asks a price, and Kenaz never pretends otherwise.
