Nauthiz

Nauthiz comes when something is missing, and that very lack is the teacher.
The meaning
Nauthiz is need: the friction of not having enough, the wall you keep coming up against, the want that will not be reasoned away. It is not a comfortable rune. But look at its shape: it is the fire-drill, two sticks pressed hard together until the friction throws a spark. Need, faced on purpose instead of fled from, becomes the exact force that lights change. It is a hard, honest teacher. It shows you, through the lack, what you actually need, and what you are made of when the easy road is closed.
Where it comes from
When plague came to a northern village, the people would put out every fire in every house, and then kindle a single new flame the old way: by friction alone, wood ground against wood until it caught. They called it the need-fire, and from it they relit every hearth. Out of pure lack, made by hand under pressure, came the fire that saved them. The old poem says need is a hard lot, but often a help. It is the sternest comfort the North ever offered, and one of the truest.
