The meaning
Othala is the homestead: what you inherit, what you keep, and what you will one day hand on. It closes the whole runic alphabet with ancestral ground: family, homeland, tradition, and the inner inheritance of the values and stories that made you. This rune gathers around belonging: what to carry forward from those who came before you, what to lay down, and what to build that will outlast your own name. Where it comes from
Odal land could not be sold out of the family. It belonged, in the old law, not to the living owner alone but to the dead who cleared it, the living who work it, and the unborn who will inherit it: all at once, across time. To sell it would have been to sell your grandchildren’s ground and your grandparents’ graves. Where Fehu opened the runes with cattle, wealth that walks and moves, Othala closes them with land, wealth that stays and roots. The whole long journey of the alphabet ends where every journey hopes to: at home.
