Dagaz comes when night turns into day.
The meaning
Dagaz is daytime: the exact instant when night becomes morning and everything is suddenly, quietly clear. It is awakening, and a change for the better that cannot be undone: the insight that rearranges the whole picture, the dawn after a long dark. Its shape is two worlds meeting at a single point. It is a threshold crossed. Once this light has shown you something, you cannot unsee it. What looked impossible at midnight looks simply obvious at dawn.
Where it comes from
In the far North the sky barely darkens at midsummer and barely lightens at midwinter, and daylight itself was a visible, precious miracle, arriving and departing like a living thing. The old poem calls day the messenger of the divine, beloved of all people: a light delivered fresh each morning like a letter from beyond the edge of the world. To people who watched the sun vanish for weeks on end, its return was never ordinary. Dagaz holds that feeling: the plain daily astonishment that the dark, however long, always ends.
